Vertical Kilometer® - Mt Elbrus, 2450-3450 m

On May, 5 one of the most popular competitions of the Red Fox Elbrus Race, took place - the Vertical Kilometer® - Mt Elbrus (2450-3450 m). It was an exciting and hard battle! 330 athletes (263 men and 67 women) from 14 countries came to the starting line of the race to struggle for records and awards of the festival.

Bright sun changed rain and clouds. It was hot at the starting line. Probably this weather became the reason that athletes didn’t set any new records.

The Catalonian team took first and third places in the ski-mountaineering race, and Cardona Oriol (Catalonia) became the fastest in the Vertical Kilometer® - Mt Elbrus, 2450-3450 m with result 0:45:43. Swiss athlete Pascal Egli came in second crossing the finish line after 46 min 8 sec. Last year’s record holder Vitaly Chernov (Red Fox Russia team), winner of the Vertical Kilometer 2015, crossed the finish line in third place. His time is 0:46:45.

Vitaly Chernov: The Vertical Kilometer race was very hard, because many strong foreign athletes took part in the competition. It was difficult to run, but nevertheless interesting. World leading athletes come here, and it’s great to compete with them.

In the women's division, Elena Kravchenko (Red Fox Russia team) came in first – 0:54:37, Nadezhda Korolyatina (Russia) second with result 0:56:16, and Oksana Stefanishina (Inov-8 Team Russia) third with time 0:56:36.

Oksana Stefanishina: I was running very carefully, because I had participated in the skimo race before. I was surprised by being among leaders. It was a deep snow, and sometimes it was hard to pass other athletes. I decided to keep pace. Most of women participated in the last year’s festival. Generally more women took part in the race.

Vertical SkyMarathon® - Mt. Elbrus, 2350-5642 m

The most challenging competition of the 2016 Red Fox Elbrus Race took place on May, 7 - the SkyMarathon® or high-speed run to the West Elbrus peak. A total of 165 athletes from 13 countries all over the world participated in the competition: 83 in the Sport race (starting at 2350m) and 82 in the Classic race (starting at 3750m).

And here are the names of leaders! Karl Egloff, from Ecuador, finished the Sport race first, reaching the western summit of Mt. Elbrus in 3 hours 44 min 43 sec! In 2014 Karl set a new skyrunning record on Mt. Kilimanjaro breaking the record of Killian Jornet (6 hours 56 min 24 sec, though standard time of tourists is 6-7 days). In 2015 he set a new world record as the fastest skyrunner ascended and descended Mt. Aconcagua, the highest mountain on the American continent, 6962 m, with result 11:52:00. This time is better than the result of Killian Jornet for 57 min! Unfortunately, a lot of fresh snow on Mt. Elbrus prevented any of the athletes from setting a new record. However, Karl promised he will try to return for next year’s Red Fox Elbrus Race festival in the quest to set new records of human performance.

As an example of how much the snow affected speed, Vitaly Shkel (Russia), who set the record in 2015 as the fastest skyrunner with a time of 03:29:04, finished second this year in 03:51:22 from the Azau Glade to the peak (Vertical SkyMarathon® - Mt Elbrus, 2350-5642 m)!

The next two athletes were less than 10minutes apart. Pascal Egli (Switzerland) and Miranda Nikolas (Ecuador) ran third (03:56:51) and fourth (04:03:48) respectively.

The first woman summited Elbrus within the Vertical SkyMarathon - Mt Elbrus, 2350-5642 m is Diana Zelenova (Russia)! Her time was 04:43:17. Catalonian athletes continued to collect medals! Marta Riba (Catalonia) finished second with a time of 04:55:13. Oksana Stefanishina (Inov-8 Team Russia) finished third in 05:23:00. Last year Oksana set two world records on Mt Elbrus as the fastest skyrunner.

Vladimir Belyay and Vyacheslav Khoroshavin (both from Belarus) were the fastest in the Classic race (starting from the Barrels, 3750-5642 m) with a time of 03:11:06! Vladimir Belyay won the Classic competition for the third year in a row!

Russian athletes Anton Karpov and Arkady Chernyaev summited Elbrus next with results of 4:02:21 and 4:20:50 respectively.

The fastest women in the Classic race were all from Russia. Marina Georgieva (Russia) came in first with a time of 04:10:20. Varvara Prokhorova came in second at 4:23:03 and Anastasiya Toritzyna took third in 5:20:57.

Red Fox TSL Challenge snowshoe race

On May 8 the Red Fox TSL Challenge snowshoe race became a colorful ending to the Red Fox winter festival. In prior years all festival competitors, including referees, organizers and media representatives participate in this exciting event. The most important thing is cheerfulness, not result.

General Director of Red Fox Alexander Glushkovsky summited Mt. Elbrus within the Red Fox Elbrus Race festival. It’s a good tradition that is held annually.
